The Unique Characteristics of Different Protein Powder Supplements

Many people who regularly work out use protein powder supplements to help themselves achieve their fitness goals easier and faster. But what do you really know about these supplements and their characteristics? There are many reasons why protein powders are becoming more and more popular nowadays.

  • They are more convenient to take than high-protein foods such as fish, meat, eggs and dairy;

Types of Protein

The type of protein which is used in protein powder supplements can be divided in two categories:

  • Animal source proteins – these include milk protein derivatives such as casein and whey, beef and egg white protein. When it comes to taste and nutrition, animal source proteins are superior and far more popular than vegetable ones. The most popular protein supplement is whey protein.
  • Vegetable source proteins – these proteins include rice, soy, hemp, pea and sprouted grain proteins.

Since whey and casein are one of the most widely used protein powder supplements, let’s take a look at some of their characteristics.

  • Whey – Whey is a complete protein which is easily digestible; helps in muscle repair and muscle breakdown. It is made from milk and it is most efficient when consumed within an hour of sweat session when the enzyme and protein synthesis is most active.
  • Casein – This is another milk protein supplement but the body absorbs it much slower than whey. It can be a great replacement for a meal as it helps you stay full longer without feeling hungry. Most of the protein in milk is casein (80%). The terms “casein protein” and “milk protein” are used interchangeably.


Protein powder supplements, whey or casein, are ideal for those with hectic schedules. For example, when you find yourself in one of those busy mornings when you are running late to work and have no time for a decent breakfast, just make your favourite protein shake, enrich it with protein powder supplements and take it with you. With the right protein supplements, you can replace a regular meal in any time of the day.
